Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And lean not on your own understanding
In all your ways acknowledge Him
And He shall direct your path
And He shall direct your path
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And lean not on your own understanding
In all your ways acknowledge Him
And He shall direct your path
And He shall direct your path
(Choir: ooooh oh oh)
He will not allow your foot to be moved
(Choir: ooooh oh oh)
He that keeps you will not slumber
(Choir: ooooh oh oh)
The Lord is near unto all them that call upon Him
To all that call upon Him in Truth
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And lean not on your own understanding
In all your ways acknowledge Him
And He shall direct your path
And He shall direct your path
Tenors: Goodness and mercy
Round: Shall follow me
Trust In The Lord
Song Meaning
Don Moen's “Trust In The Lord” sets Scripture almost word for word, which makes it a song that is easy to memorize. It opens with Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path.” The path line is sung twice, giving the promise room to settle.
The second section moves to the Psalms. “He will not allow your foot to be moved, He that keeps you will not slumber” is the language of Psalm 121. “The Lord is near unto all them that call upon Him, to all that call upon Him in truth” comes from Psalm 145:18. The choir parts add texture, with the closing round of “goodness and mercy” answered by “shall follow me,” the line from Psalm 23:6.
Taken together, the verses make a small argument for confidence: guidance when you trust, protection from a God who never sleeps, nearness to those who pray honestly, and kindness that follows the believer through life. Few words are added to the passages, so the song reads as a stitched reading of Scripture and not a new composition.
