You Alone

Don Moen's “You Alone” builds on the prayer King Solomon prayed at the dedication of the temple. The opening lines come straight from it: Lord God of Israel, there is no God in heaven above or on earth below like you, who keeps covenant and mercy with servants who walk before him with all their hearts.

The chorus is a short declaration repeated by the congregation, “You alone are God,” followed by lines of response: we lift our voice in praise, we bow to worship you. A leader's cues are written into the lyric, with echoes in parentheses that the crowd takes up. Then the song moves to the throne room of heaven. It says he is worthy to receive glory, honor and power because he created all things, and by his will they existed and were created. A passage from King David's prayer adds that the greatness, power, glory, victory and majesty belong to the Lord, and that all in heaven and on earth is his. He is exalted as head over all. The structure is simple and meant for a gathering to build slowly, repeating the central line until the room settles on it. It suits worship services that want a focused moment of adoration, especially one grounded in what the Bible says about God's greatness instead of personal feeling alone.

There is no God like him in 1 Kings 8:23. Worthy to receive glory is Revelation 4:11, and greatness, power and glory are in 1 Chronicles 29:11.
