Open Up

Dunsin Oyekan's “Open Up” is an extended prayer for the Spirit to flow. It begins with a command to the singer's own spirit, “open up, let it flow now,” and then asks to come “out of the mundane to where I am ordained.” The first verse refers to unseen things, “we are made from things unseen,” and “realms of glory for my world to see,” which are reached “only in Jesus Christ the Son.”

The chorus gives four short lines that are repeated and answered with “open up.” They say “channels of my spirit,” “I am with the Father,” “no boundaries, no limits,” and “let deep call unto deep.” A bridge quotes the promise that “out of my belly shall flow rivers of living water.” The rest is a chant of “let the river flow.” The repetition lets the song build slowly and invites a congregation to join in prayer for as long as the moment requires.

The rivers of living water are John 7:38, which John explains as the Spirit. Deep calling to deep is Psalm 42:7, and the river flowing out is also pictured in Ezekiel 47:1.
