I Will Wait For You - Psalm 130

Keith and Kristyn Getty's “I Will Wait For You” is a setting of Psalm 130, the psalm that begins in the deep. “Out of the depths I cry to You, in darkest places I will call,” it opens, and asks God to “incline Your ear to me anew and hear my cry for mercy, Lord.” The sinner is not defended. The first verse asks, “Were You to count my sinful ways, how could I come before Your throne,” and answers it at once: “Yet full forgiveness meets my gaze, I stand redeemed by grace alone.”

The chorus is the psalm's waiting made into a promise. “I will wait for You, on Your word I will rely,” it says, and the waiting lasts “till my soul is satisfied.” The second verse addresses the listener, “put your hope in God alone, take courage in His power to save,” and then adds the Christian reading of the psalm: “Completely and forever won by Christ emerging from the grave.” The final lines say God himself “has paid the price” so that all who trust find “healing in His sacrifice.”

The song follows Psalm 130:1-8 closely. Verse 3 supplies the question about counting sins, verse 5 the waiting on God's word, and verse 7 the plentiful redemption.
