That directness borrows from two separate wells in the Gospel of John: the woman at the well, promised water that ends thirst for good, and the temple courts, where Jesus stands and calls out to anyone parched. The song folds both moments into one image of a river flowing with mercy, echoing the stream that gladdens the city of God in the Psalms. What keeps the lyric from turning generic is its insistence on physical relief — rest beside the water, lay the old life down, rise up new — rather than abstract comfort. The cross appears not as a symbol to admire but as the place refreshing actually starts, which gives the repeated invitation ('are you thirsty, are you empty') real weight rather than rhetorical flourish.
