O Come O Come Emmanuel

Gungor's reading of the ancient Advent hymn keeps the original's long waiting intact, opening with a plea for Emmanuel to come and ransom a captive Israel that "mourns in lonely exile." The second stanza shifts the imagery toward light breaking into darkness, asking the day-spring to cheer weary spirits, scatter the gloomy clouds, and put death's shadow to flight. Between each petition the refrain answers with a simple, repeated call to rejoice, since Emmanuel will come to Israel. The final verse widens the scope from a single people to all of humanity, asking the desire of nations to bind divided hearts together, end sad divisions, and become king of peace. The song holds lament and anticipation in the same breath — exile and clouds on one side, rejoicing and peace on the other — and never rushes past the waiting to get to the celebration. That tension is the point: the plea for rescue is itself an act of trust, and the repeated refrain turns longing into a confession that the promised arrival is certain.
