The Great Homesickness

Gungor's "The Great Homesickness" opens with a tender paradox: addressing God as the "gentlest of ways" who nonetheless "ripens us" while we wrestle. The second verse pushes further into mystery, claiming that in creating humanity God "created Yourself," and that people grew "sturdy" in divine sunlight. The chorus then names the ache at the song's center — a homesickness that could never be shaken off, paired with images of a forest that always surrounded us, a song sung within every silence, and a dark net threading through. These lines treat longing not as a problem to solve but as the constant texture of creaturely life before God. The repeated "I love You" that closes each chorus is spare and unadorned, almost a sigh, and the song ends by simply saying it three more times. There is no resolution or arrival here, only the naming of distance and the choice to love across it. The lyric's power sits in that tension: the same presence that feels like absence, the net that threads through everything, is the one addressed as beloved.
