It Came Upon A Midnight Clear

Hannah Kerr and Austin French's "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" carries Edmund Sears' 1849 carol through its full, less-commonly-sung text, including the third verse most recordings skip entirely: "for lo, the days are hast'ning on, by prophet seen of old, when with the ever-circling years shall come the time foretold."

"Peace on the earth, good will to men, from Heav'n's all-gracious King" is the angels' own words repeated as the carol's refrain, echoing Luke's account of that same proclamation the night Christ was born. But Sears' original text was never only about a birth already finished — "when Christ shall come and all shall own the Prince of Peace, their King" points the carol forward to a return still expected, not just a past event being remembered.

The added closing section, "oh, He's coming, oh, He's here," collapses that distance between then and not-yet into a single repeated declaration. Kerr and French's arrangement doesn't treat the carol as strictly nostalgic — the same midnight-clear announcement that started with shepherds is framed here as still actively unfolding.
