Christ Is Born (A Christmas Medley)
Song Meaning
Highlands Worship weaves five separate carols into a single medley rather than performing any one in full, opening with "Away In A Manger": "away in a manger, no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head."
"What Child Is This" supplies the medley's next section — "this, this is Christ the King, whom shepherds guard and angels sing" — before shifting into "Go Tell It On The Mountain"'s repeated command to spread the news.
"Star of wonder, star of night... disperse the gloomy clouds of night and death's dark shadows put to flight" borrows from "O Holy Night," pairing its imagery of a guiding star with an unusually direct reference to death being pushed back before the medley even reaches the resurrection.
"Joy to the world, the Lord is come" closes the arrangement on its final, most familiar carol, the different songs' distinct melodies and eras folded into one continuous announcement rather than kept as separate, disconnected pieces.
Away in a manger no crib for a bed
The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head
The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay
This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste to bring Him laud
The Babe, the Son of Mary
Noel, Noel
Born the King of Israel
Noel, Noel
Born is our King
Go tell it, go tell it
Repeat the sounding joy
Go tell it, go tell it
Jesus is born
Star of wonder, star of night
Star with royal beauty bright
Over hills and everywhere
Lies our dear Savior there
Go tell it, go tell it, go tell it, go tell it
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight
Go tell it, go tell it
Our Christ is born
Fall on your knees
This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Go tell it, go tell it
Our Christ is born
Oh night divine
Oh night our Christ is born
Joy to the world (Go tell it)
The Lord is come (Over the hills and everywhere)
Joy to the world (Go tell it, go tell it)
Our Christ is born
Joy to the world
Our Christ is born
