Best Friends

Hillsong Young & Free names the exhaustion of a very specific, very modern performance — "trying to be somebody I'm not," chasing "lights" that fade and "cheap thrills" that turn out to be "time wasted." The verse doesn't stay vague about the cost of that performance.

Their chorus makes the demand blunt: "all of my best friends are sick of pretending, we want the truth... so give us the real thing, I know it's You." Hillsong Young & Free treats authenticity not as a personality trait but as something only found outside the systems currently defining identity — "why should society's plan define who I am?"

Jesus tells his disciples in John 14:6 that he is "the way, the truth, and the life," the exact thing the chorus is demanding, and God tells Samuel in 1 Samuel 16:7 that he looks at the heart rather than outward appearance. The song's repeated insistence — "surely there's a higher way" — treats the search for something real as instinct pointing toward God, even before the singer has fully named who they're looking for.
