God Bless America

Influence Music and Michael Ketterer keep Irving Berlin's 1938 text essentially untouched through its familiar verses — mountains, prairies, oceans white with foam — before adding a bridge that shifts the song's whole address from the nation to God directly: 'Hallelujah our God reigns... Hallelujah our Jesus reigns.' The original song asks God to bless and guide a country; the addition names who's actually doing the reigning underneath that blessing.

Psalm 33:12's declaration, 'blessed is the nation whose God is Yahweh,' sits behind the whole pairing — the blessing the original song asks for isn't treated as automatic or generic, but specifically tied to whose God is being called on. The added 'hallelujah' section echoes Revelation 19:6's cry, 'the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns,' repeated first about God generally and then specifically about Jesus — a small but deliberate move from the original's broad, ecumenical 'light from above' language toward a name.
