Melodies (Interlude)

Jackie Hill Perry's "Melodies (Interlude)" is a short, direct setting of the old gospel hymn "Nothing but the Blood of Jesus," and it doesn't waste any of its brief runtime on anything but the hymn's central question and answer. "What can wash away my sins? Nothing but the blood of Jesus" states the whole theology of the song in its first two lines and then just keeps repeating the claim from different angles.

"And oh precious is that flow, that makes me white as snow, no other fount I know" leans on the same principle Hebrews states plainly — that without the shedding of blood, there's no forgiveness of sin, no substitute source strong enough to actually deal with it. The hymn doesn't offer alternatives to weigh; it names the one thing that works and rules out everything else by omission.

"My soul, my soul cries out Hallelujah, I thank God for saving me" shifts the song from doctrine into gratitude in its final lines, the short interlude ending not on an argument but on a response — the natural reaction once the first question has actually been answered.
