Greater Is Coming

Jekalyn Carr's “Greater Is Coming” starts with a spoken illustration. An olive has to go through three stages for its oil to run: the shaking, the beating and the pressing. She tells listeners that they may have felt that way, and that they went through all of it so their oil could flow. Then she says, “Now your greater is coming.”

The verses reframe each hardship as preparation. If not for the shaking, she would not have been ready for the making. If not for the beating, she would not know how anointed she would be. If not for the pressing, she could not walk into her destiny. The middle of the song is a long declaration led by the choir. It lists what is coming, including greater anointing, power, destiny and doors, and names God as healer, deliverer, redeemer, restorer and waymaker. The ending changes the tense: “My greater is already here,” and “I'm walking into a new season.” The recording is long and driven by call-and-response, which suits a live crowd. A quoted line about the afflictions of the righteous and deliverance gives the scriptural basis for the message.

Many afflictions and deliverance from them all are in Psalm 34:19. What eyes have not seen is 1 Corinthians 2:9, and a new thing springing forth is Isaiah 43:19.
