Everything I Need

Joyful Way builds almost the entire song around one repeated confession — "nothing else but You, everything I need is You" — stated so many times it stops sounding like a lyric and starts sounding like a settled decision rather than a feeling still being worked out.

The short list that follows names specific roles rather than staying vague: "my way maker, my strong tower, my deliverer, my shield." Each title answers a different kind of need, the way a person might actually need different things depending on the day.

The song closes by folding in Charles Wesley's own centuries-old hymn text almost unannounced — "we lift our hearts and voices with blest anticipation, and cry aloud, and give to God the praise of our salvation" — before landing on a declaration borrowed straight from worship's oldest instinct: "he alone is worthy." Paul's promise that God will supply every need, and the psalmist's confession that God is the strength of his heart regardless of what else fails, both back up a song that spends its whole runtime saying the same true thing in slightly different words.
