Victory

Kim Burrell's “Victory” starts as a personal account. She says she has already come through, and she is “here to bear witness that the Lord brought me through everyone.” When the enemy comes in like a flood, she says, the sound of the Lord lifts her above it, soothing doubts and calming fears.

The central declaration is “Yes, I got the victory and I've been made free. It loosened my shackles that were binding me.” She calls herself an overcomer by the power of the Holy Ghost and says that through faith she can conquer anything. A verse borrowed from the old hymn tradition mentions dangers seen and unseen and says the Lord continually keeps her, so there is no need to be dismayed. Then the crowd is asked, “Tell me who can stand before Him when I call on His great name,” and the answer is Jesus. The ending turns into a call-and-response with the line “This joy that I have, the world didn't give it, and the world can't take it away.” She spells out V-I-C-T-O-R-Y as the choir answers. The song is high energy and fits a testimony service or any gathering where people want to celebrate a hard fight that has been won.

Faith that overcomes the world is 1 John 5:4. Jesus overcoming the world is John 16:33, and joy coming in the morning is Psalm 30:5.
