Song Meaning
Kirk Franklin's “Lovely Day” starts with a morning that is going badly. The singer wakes “and my heart is filled with pain,” the smile is gone, and he “can't see the sun shine from the rain.” Then he thinks of Jesus, and his mood turns: “When I think of you, and the world's alright with me, Lord, just one thought of you and I, it's gonna be a lovely day.”
The chorus is the title chanted over and over. The second verse says why, calling Jesus “the lover of my soul, the fire that burns down deep within” and “the joy this world can't take away.” A rap follows, aimed at anyone who is ready to quit, with advice that falls as plain questions, “How can you learn if you don't fall, how can you walk if first you don't crawl?” He says that even while people test and press him, God keeps blessing.
The idea of a day made by the Lord is Psalm 118:24. A joy that cannot be taken away is John 16:22, and mornings full of new mercy are Lamentations 3:22-23.
