Come Thou Long Expected Jesus

Laura Story keeps Charles Wesley's 1744 Advent text essentially untouched, and its opening line does something most Christmas songs don't — it addresses Jesus as already 'long expected' before the story of his arrival even begins, treating the wait itself as part of the theology rather than a detail to skip past. 'Born to set Thy people free from our fears and sins' echoes Matthew 1:21's naming of Jesus specifically 'to save his people from their sins.'

'Born a child and yet a King' holds two categories together that don't normally fit — helplessness and authority — the same tension Isaiah 9:6 sets up centuries earlier with 'unto us a child is born... and the government shall be upon his shoulder.' The added bridge, 'come now great Redeemer, come Emmanuel,' turns the historical waiting described in Wesley's verses into a present-tense invitation, asking for the same arrival that already happened to keep happening now: 'make our hearts Your home.'
