Death Was Arrested
Song Meaning
Laura Story's “Death Was Arrested” is a version of the Northpoint Worship song that retells the gospel from the point of view of someone rescued. It begins in despair: “Alone in my sorrow and dead in my sin, lost without hope with no place to begin.” Then love makes a way for mercy, “when death was arrested and my life began.”
The verses list what changed. Ash is redeemed and only beauty remains, an orphan heart is given a name, and mourning grows quiet as feet rise to dance. The second verse speaks of chains released and a debt cancelled, with shame carried as a ransom by the one who calls the singer His friend. The third verse goes to the cross, where the Saviour is displayed on a criminal's cross and darkness rejoices as though heaven had lost. But Jesus rises “with our freedom in hand.” The chorus is wide open and meant for a crowd: “Oh, it's Your endless love, pouring down on us. You have made us new.” The ending invites everyone to “come join the song of all the redeemed.” Because the lyric moves from the cross to the empty tomb and then to a shared celebration, it fits Easter services, though it is just as common in ordinary weeks when a church wants to sing about what Christ has done.
Death swallowed up in victory is 1 Corinthians 15:54-55. Beauty for ashes is Isaiah 61:3, and the debt cancelled at the cross is Colossians 2:14.
Lost without hope with no place to begin
Your love made a way to let mercy come in
When death was arrested and my life began
Ash was redeemed only beauty remains
My orphan heart, was given a name
My mourning grew quiet, my feet rose to dance
When death was arrested and my life began
Oh Your grace, so free
Washes over me
You have made me new
Now life begins with You
Released from my chains I'm a prisoner no more
My shame was a ransom He faithfully bore
He cancelled my debt and He called me His friend
When death was arrested and my life began
Oh Your grace, so free
Washes over me
You have made me new
Now life begins with You
It's Your endless love
Pouring down on us
You have made us new
Now life begins with You
Ohh with You
Our Saviour displayed on a criminal's cross
Darkness rejoiced as though Heaven had lost
But then Jesus arose with our freedom in hand
That's when death was arrested and my life began, ohhh!
Oh Your grace, so free
Washes over me
You have made me new
Now life begins with You
Ohh, it's Your endless love
Pouring down on us
You have made us new
Now life begins with You
Oh we're free, free
Forever we're free
Come join the song
Of all the redeemed
Yes we're free, free
Forever amen
When death was arrested and my life began
We're free, free
Forever we're free
Come join the song
Of all the redeemed
Yes we're free, free
Forever amen
When death was arrested and my life began
When death was arrested and my life, began
