Once In Royal David's City

Laura Story's "Once in Royal David's City" carries Cecil Frances Alexander's 1848 carol, written originally to teach children the Apostles' Creed line by line. "Stood a lowly cattle shed where a mother laid her Baby in a manger for His bed" keeps the scene as plain and unglamorous as the gospel accounts themselves — no royal city befitting the "royal David" of the title, just a shed.

"He came down to earth from heaven, who is God and Lord of all, and His shelter was a stable, and His cradle was a stall" holds two facts together without softening either one — genuinely God and Lord of all, and genuinely born into the kind of poverty that gets a stable instead of a room. "With the poor, and mean, and lowly, lived on earth our Saviour holy" makes plain that the entire earthly life, not just the birth, followed that same downward pattern.

The final verse looks past the manger toward what's still ahead: "our eyes at last shall see Him... He leads His children on to the place where He is gone." The carol doesn't end at Christmas; it ends with the promise that the child in the stable is also the one who goes ahead to prepare a place for everyone still following.
