Take Me Higher

Lincoln Brewster's “Take Me Higher” is a prayer for closeness to God. It opens with words taken from David's psalm of repentance: take not your Spirit from me. The singer asks to be led to God's peace and says his one desire is to be with him.

He asks God to cleanse his life and make him pure, and to wrap him up in his arms. The chorus is the prayer in the title, take me higher and draw me closer, and pull me deeper than I have ever been. The second verse continues the theme, with the plea hide not your face from me and the request that the Lord set his spirit free. The bridge repeats the request more simply: take me higher, draw me closer, take me higher than I have ever been, because next to God is where he wants to be. Brewster is a guitarist, and the song's rock arrangement gives space for long instrumental builds under the words. The lyrics are short and open, so a worship team can repeat the chorus and bridge for as long as a service needs. The idea of going higher, deeper and closer all describe the same thing, a wish to be nearer to God than the distractions of ordinary life allow. It suits a time of ministry at the end of a service, a youth retreat or personal worship.

Not taking the Spirit away is Psalm 51:11. A clean heart is Psalm 51:10, and drawing near to God is James 4:8.
