Song Meaning

Marvia Providence's “I Am A Warrior” is a march in gospel dress. The opening lines set the scene, “We are soldiers in the army, we have to fight or we have to die,” and the next ones give the task, to hold up “the bloodstained banner” until the end. The wording comes from a traditional army-of-the-Lord spiritual, which gives the song the feel of a church standard even as the arrangement adds modern drums and a choir.

The middle section changes from a group to a group going forward: “We are going up, we're going up together, we're going up to conquer in the name of the Lord.” Then the singer speaks directly to doubt, “Don't talk defeat to me,” and answers it with her identity, “I am a child of God and I've got the victory.” The close is a list of titles, “I am a warrior, I am a conqueror, I'm an overcomer,” each one sung as a statement of fact.

The soldier image is from 2 Timothy 2:3, where Paul tells Timothy to endure hardship as a good soldier of Christ. The overcomer title echoes 1 John 5:4, and “more than conquerors” in Romans 8:37 is the source of the claim to victory.

We are soldiers in the army

We have to fight or we have to die

We have to hold up the bloodstained battle

We got to hold it up until we die

We are soldiers in the army

We have to fight or we have to die

We have to hold up the bloodstained banner

We got to hold it up until we die

We are going up, we're going up together

We're going up to conquer

In the name of the Lord

We are going up, we're going up together

We're going up to conquer

In the name of the Lord

Don't talk no, no

Don't talk defeat to me

I am a child of God and I've got the victory

Don't talk no, no

Don't talk defeat to me

I am a child of God and I've got the victory

I am a warrior

I am a conquerer

I'm an overcomer

In the name of the Lord

I am a warrior

I am a conquerer

I'm an overcomer

In the name of the Lord

We are going up, we're going up together

We're going up to conquer

In the name of the Lord

We are going up, we're going up together

We're going up to conquer

In the name of the Lord

Don't talk no, no

Don't talk defeat to me

I am a child of God and I've got the victory

Don't talk no, no

Don't talk defeat to me

I am a child of God and I've got the victory

I am a warrior

I am a conquerer

I'm an overcomer

In the name of the Lord

I am a warrior

I am a conquerer

I'm an overcomer

In the name of the Lord
