Something To Say

Matthew West's “Something To Say” is an upbeat pop song about finding a voice. It starts with a groggy morning, waking at 7:32 and not believing it is time to do it all over again, after a day that took everything. The song says the world is waiting at the door for the listener to come out and let their life be heard.

The chorus is a plain statement: you have something to say. If you are living and breathing and your heart is beating, no one can say it like you do. A line adds that God is love and love speaks through. The second verse asks a blunt question, would anybody miss you if you disappeared, and answers that your life is the song you sing, the world is listening, and you were created, your life is a gift. The lights are shining on you today. A group sing-along of “na na na” leads to a final call to just say it. West wrote the song with encouragement for ordinary people in mind, and the energetic beat fits a youth event, a school assembly or a morning playlist. It carries a message that worth comes from being made by God, not from performance, and that each person has a part in the larger story.

Being fearfully and wonderfully made is Psalm 139:14. People created for good works is Ephesians 2:10, and letting your light shine is Matthew 5:16.
