O Holy Night

Stars shine over a world that "long lay" in "sin and error pining," and Maverick City Music keeps the carol's familiar frame: the night of the Savior's birth is when "the soul felt its worth." "A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices" leads into a chorus that commands the response, "Fall on your knees," with angel voices and a repeated "O night divine."

The second verse shifts from the manger to ethics. Christ "taught us to love one another," his law is love and his gospel is peace, and chains break because "the slave is our brother," with oppression ceasing "in His name." The closing section is pure praise: "Christ is the Lord," his power and glory proclaimed evermore.

Scripture gives the carol its backbone: Luke 2:10-14 for the angels' announcement, Isaiah 9:2 for light dawning on people in darkness, John 13:34 for the commandment to love, and Philemon 1:16 for the brotherhood that reframes a slave.
