Silent Night / Jesus We Love You

Maverick City Music pairs the 1818 carol with a much newer refrain, and the transition works because both halves are making the same kind of claim from different centuries. "Radiant beams from thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace" keeps Joseph Mohr's original text intact, reaching back to Luke 2:7's spare description of the child "wrapped... in bands of cloth, and laid... in a feeding trough" — glory arriving in the plainest possible setting.

The added bridge, "our affection, our devotion, poured out on the feet of Jesus," pictures worship as an offering rather than only a feeling, echoing the woman who poured expensive perfume on Jesus's feet in John 12:3. The repeated closing refrain, "Jesus we love you, oh how we love you," answers 1 John 4:19's claim that "we love him, because he first loved us" — response following, in the song's own structure, only after the carol has already spent three verses describing what was given first.
