I Am Love

Michael W. Smith writes "I Am Love" entirely in God's own voice, letting every line answer an accusation the singer never actually states out loud — "I am not a passer by, I am not a white lie, I am not left to die, I am love." The defensive structure implies a listener who has doubted exactly these things, even though their side of the conversation stays silent.

"You can try to hide, you can try to run, but you'll never run far enough... you can flee to the west, you can flee to the east, but you can't escape what I've done" borrows the language of inescapable pursuit, but aims it at love rather than judgment — the thing being fled from is a gift, not a threat.

"This is my flesh, this is my blood... I did not bleed in vain" ties the declared identity directly to the crucifixion, so that "I am love" isn't a general claim about character but a reference to one specific, costly act repeated as proof.
