Michael W. Smith keeps this song to a handful of lines, and there's nothing hidden in them: "Oh God, You are my God, and I will ever praise You. I will seek You in the morning, and I will learn to walk in Your ways." It's a short, plain declaration rather than a song built around a developing story.

The opening line is close to word-for-word Psalm 63:1 — "O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you" — David's own prayer from the wilderness, written when he had nothing but the desire to seek God first thing. Smith's version keeps that same order: God named first, praise following, seeking scheduled for the morning before anything else competes for attention.

The title phrase itself — "step by step You'll lead me, and I will follow You all of my days" — echoes Psalm 37:23's picture of a life whose steps are "established by the Lord." There's no verse describing a specific struggle here, no storm named.
