I Know

Michael W Smith writes to a very specific scene — homeroom chatter, "plans being made for after school," and a quieter question underneath it all: "should you tell them how you're really feelin', or go along and play it cool." He doesn't pretend the pressure to fit in is small.

His repeated response isn't advice from a distance — it's solidarity: "well, I know, I know, how it feels." Smith names the isolation directly, "torn between the mind of the crowd and the matters of the heart," before pointing toward something steadier than either: "if you can lean upon the Father, you can find the strength within."

Psalm 34:18 promises God stays close "unto them that are of a broken heart," not distant from that kind of pressure, and Jesus calls himself "the light of the world" in John 8:12, a light for exactly the kind of darkness Smith keeps describing. By the final verse, Smith hands the "I know" over to someone bigger than himself: "He knows, He knows how you feel" — the empathy was never just his own.
