Michael W. Smith paints this song almost like a parable — someone "weighted down with regrets," unable to see "the road ahead," staring at a sky "washed black" because the burden is too heavy to look up. The verses read less like commentary and more like a scene, watching a person slowly notice what they'd been missing.

By the second verse the load breaks: "you kneel upon the broken wheat," and "you watch your burden fall away." What once seemed essential — everything once "sought" — is "now counted less than lost." Smith frames that release as clarity finally arriving: "now you see the light of day."

The chorus keeps pointing toward "the narrow way," echoing Jesus' words in Matthew 7:14 about the narrow gate that leads to life, and the burden lifting recalls his invitation in Matthew 11:28-30 to trade a heavy yoke for rest. Smith's repeated command — "open your eyes... open your mind... follow the signs" — reads as an invitation to notice what's already been laid out, not to chase something hidden.
