The Real Me
Song Meaning
Natalie Grant spends the first verse on the exhausting work of performing okay — "same old game of plastic smile... self-inflicted circus clown, I'm tired of the song and dance" — before the chorus answers not with advice to stop performing but with the claim that someone already sees past it: "you see the real me, hiding in my skin, broken from within." That's close to 1 Samuel 16:7's line about the Lord seeing the heart where people only see appearance.
"You're turning the tattered fabric of my life into a perfect tapestry" reworks Psalm 139:14's wonder at being fearfully and wonderfully made, applied to a life that doesn't feel finished yet rather than one already put together. "Wonderful, beautiful is what you see when you look at me" isn't Grant describing herself; it's what she's finally willing to believe someone else sees, which is a different and harder thing to say out loud.
Same old game of plastic smile
Don't let anybody in
Hiding my heartache, will this glass house break
How much will they take before I'm empty
Do I let it show, does anybody know?
[Chorus]
But you see the real me
Hiding in my skin, broken from within
Unveil me completely
I'm loosening my grasp
There's no need to mask my frailty
Cause you see the real me
[Verse 2]
Painted on, life is behind a mask
Self-inflicted circus clown
I'm tired of the song and dance
Living a charade, always on parade
What a mess I've made of my existence
But you love me even now
And still I see somehow
[Chorus]
But you see the real me
Hiding in my skin, broken from within
Unveil me completely
I'm loosening my grasp
There's no need to mask my frailty
Cause you see the real me
[Bridge]
Wonderful, beautiful is what you see
When you look at me
You're turning the tattered fabric of my life into
A perfect tapestry
I just wanna be me
[Chorus]
But you see the real me
Hiding in my skin, broken from within
Unveil me completely
I'm loosening my grasp
There's no need to mask my frailty
Cause you see the real me
[Outro]
And you love me just as I am
Wonderful, beautiful is what you see
When you look at me
