A Little Light
Song Meaning
Light is the only currency here, and the song asks who might be short of it. NewSong begins with an observation: "sometimes it's hidden well," because "everything seems right," yet the more the singer looks, "everybody's looking for a little light in me." The need is described as widespread and often unspoken.
The chorus turns that into a standing instruction: "You never know who needs a little light, you never know when the time's right." The second verse makes it concrete with an image of sight, since "if the blind need the blind, they'll never see" without someone willing to shine. The singer places himself and the listener on the same footing, "you and me," as the ones carrying it.
Near the end the familiar children's line breaks in, "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine," and the closing repeats set it against the chorus. Matthew 5:16 asks that believers let their light shine before others, John 8:12 names Jesus as the light of the world that makes it possible, and Philippians 2:15 describes believers as lights in a crooked generation.
Sometimes it's hard to tell
Who needs just a little light
Sometimes it's hidden well
Everything seems right
But the more I look
The more I see
Everybody's looking for
A little light in me
You never know who needs a little light
You never know when the time's right
So never say never
No matter whoever's in sight
You never know who needs a little light
Sometimes the blind can't see
All they need is a little light
Sometimes they need you and me
To shine so bright
'Cause if the blind need the blind
They'll never see
If they don't get a little light
For you and me
You never know who needs a little light
You never know when the time's right
So never say never
No matter whoever's in sight
You never know who needs a little light
This little light of me
I'm gonna let it shine
I'm gonna let it shine
Let it shine!
You never know who needs a little light
You never know when the time's right
So never say never
No matter whoever's in sight
You never know who needs a little light
You never know who needs a little light
You never know when the time's right
So never say never
No matter whoever's in sight
You never know who needs a little light
You never know who needs a little light
(You never know who needs a little light)
This little light of mine
(You never know who needs a little light)
You never know who needs a little light
(You never know who needs a little light)
This little light of mine
(You never know who needs a little light...)
