Heaven Is You
Song Meaning
NewSong spends the opening verse listing heaven's traditional imagery — golden streets, pearly gates — only to set all of it aside by the chorus: 'heaven is You.' The move isn't dismissing those images as false, just refusing to let them be the actual point of longing for heaven in the first place.
'Deep inside me there's a longing to see You, Lord, face to face' echoes 1 Corinthians 13:12's promise that what's now seen 'in a mirror, dimly' will one day be seen 'face to face,' and 'even if there are no streets of gold, Lord, You know that I wouldn't care' takes that promise to its logical extreme — stripping away every reward except the relationship itself and testing whether the desire still holds. Psalm 73:25's declaration, 'whom do I have in heaven? There is no one on earth I desire besides You,' is the whole song compressed into one verse, written centuries before but making the identical bet: presence over paradise, every time.
Well, I've heard a lot about heaven
It's such a beautiful place
They say the streets there are golden
There's talk about pearly gates
Lord, I know You've prepared me a home there
Far beyond all the dreams of my heart
But I'll tell You the truth
All I really want from You
Is to be wherever You are
Heaven is You
Heaven is You
And every time I try to describe
Paradise it's so easy to do
Heaven is You
Deep inside me there's a longing
To see You Lord, face to face
Now I keep thinking about that moment
It makes it so hard to wait
Even if there are no streets of gold
Lord, You know that I wouldn't care
It really wouldn't make any difference to me
Just as long as You are there
And I know one day I'll walk through those gates
And I'll see the perfect place that Your love has made
It's a dream that would never come if it wasn't for all You have done
