Magnet
Song Meaning
NewSong's “Magnet” is told as a story about a dream. The singer wakes up one night asking what the feeling is, and describes it as “a giant magnet pulling on my heart, pulling me toward heaven and into Jesus' arms.” It is like the feeling he gets when he is near the Lord, only “a million times stronger.” He turns to his wife and says, “I believe that Jesus is calling us home.”
The chorus asks, “Can you feel it, growing stronger every day? Can you hear it, telling us He's on His way?” It admits that no one knows the day or hour, yet “all God's children can feel His power, pulling us to Him.” The second verse describes running to the window, watching the clouds part and listening for a trumpet or an angel's shout. When nothing is heard, the couple grabs each other and prays, saying they are both ready if Jesus is coming that day. They laugh, cry and stand on their bed. The last line says it was only a dream, but it felt so real that it changed him. The song is a lighthearted way of expressing readiness for the return of Christ.
The Lord descending with a shout and trumpet is 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17. No one knowing the day or hour is Matthew 24:36, and being drawn to him is John 12:32.
And it was so very real
I sat up in my bed
Said “what’s this feeling that I feel?”
It felt like a giant magnet
Was pulling on my heart
Pulling me toward heaven and into Jesus’ arms
Well, it’s the feeling that I feel when I get real close to him
But a million times stronger than it had ever been
So I turned to my wife, said “Baby something’s going on,”
I said, “I believe that Jesus is calling us home.”
Can you feel it, growing stronger every day
Can you hear it, telling us He’s on His way
No one knows the day or the hour
But all God’s children can feel His power
Pulling us to Him
It’s the magnet
It’s the magnet of His love
It’s the magnet
It’s the magnet of His love
I ran to my window and stared up into the sky
It looked like the clouds were parting, right before my eyes
I listened for a trumpet or to hear an angel shout
And for a moment I stood frozen I couldn’t make a sound
Then I grabbed my wife, I said, “Baby, lets pray”
We said, “Jesus, we’re both ready if You’re coming for us today,”
And we laughed and we cried and we stood up on our bed
And we felt like our hearts were gonna jump out of our chests
Can you feel it, growing stronger every day
Can you hear it, telling us He’s on His way
No one knows the day or the hour
But all God’s children can feel His power
Pulling us to Him
It’s the magnet
It’s the magnet of His love
It’s the magnet
It’s the magnet of His love
It was just a dream but it felt so real
That it’s changed me
