Square Peg, Round Hole

NewSong builds this one around a shape rather than a feeling: "deep inside our hearts is a godlike shape, a perfect fit for Jesus in every way." The claim is architectural before it's emotional — something was built to hold a specific piece, and only that piece actually fits.

"We fill it up with every other thing under the sun, and it can't be done" names the strategy most people actually try, and the title image makes the failure concrete: "a square peg won't go in a round hole... you can try to fill your life with everything but Christ, but it just won't go."

Ecclesiastes' observation that God has set eternity in the human heart gives the song's central shape its scriptural root, and Paul's declaration that all things were created through Christ and for him, and in him all things hold together, backs up the claim that nothing else was ever going to fit the same way. "Take a little step of faith" closes the song on the only response left once the shape has actually been named correctly.
