Nicole C. Mullen starts with ordinary hurt rather than a Bible scene: people who are "down right mean," who see only "the mud on your shoes" and never ask what you've been through. A remembered saying from "Papa," "Troubles don't last always," becomes the first comfort, followed by "brighter days will come / As sure as the rising sun."
