Tis So Sweet

Nicole C. Mullen keeps Louisa Stead's nineteenth-century hymn text short and unadorned, and the opening line names trust as something pleasant rather than difficult: "'tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, just to take Him at His word." No struggle gets described before the confidence arrives.

The second verse grounds that trust in accumulated evidence rather than a single decision: "I'm so glad I've learned to trust Him... how I've proved Him o'er and o'er." Trust, here, is something built up over repeated experience, not a one-time leap.

Paul's own confidence that he knows whom he has believed, and is convinced God is able to guard what's been entrusted to him, echoes the hymn's closing assurance that Jesus will "be with me 'til the end." The psalmist's invitation to "taste and see that the Lord is good" matches the hymn's whole logic — not an argument for trusting Jesus, just a report of what trusting him has actually been like.
