Family Tree

Nicole C. Mullen traces “Family Tree” through named ancestors, skin tones, marriage, seed, and soil. What began with two people under watchful eyes grows beyond anything they could have seen. The family is pictured as a forest whose branches spread overhead, giving later generations a place to breathe and live in the shade.

That shade is not treated as effortless inheritance. The closing thanks recognizes that earlier family members “took the heat” so someone after them could receive shelter. Mullen honors endurance through concrete names and bodies rather than speaking of ancestry in general terms. Roots, leaves, and canopy hold sacrifice and belonging in the same image.

Psalm 78:4 calls one generation to tell the next about God’s works, while Genesis 2:24 points to the union from which a new household grows. First John 3:18 gives practical language to the love celebrated here: love expressed in action and truth. The song becomes an act of thanksgiving for people whose choices, labor, and protection still bless branches they never lived to see.
