Lamb Of God
Song Meaning
Nicole C. Mullen's “Lamb Of God” is a Christmas song that moves from the manger to a personal offering. The first verse sets the scene on a long night in Bethlehem, where a baby graced the silence and cried out that he is Emmanuel. Angels gave him music and shepherds gave reverence, while a widow held and cherished the God who became a man.
The chorus calls him Lamb of God and Prince of Peace and asks what tribute a person can bring to worship him. The singer has no gold to lay at his feet, so she offers herself. The second verse turns to the wise men, guided by a star and searching the earth until they found the child who ruled the universe. It adds that everything they gave him he had made with his own hands. The bridge lists what she brings: her hopes, her dreams, her soul, her mind and all her strength, wrapped inside her heart to give to him. It then joins the carol line, O come let us adore him, before returning to the plea to let her offer herself. Mullen's voice is gentle, and the piano arrangement keeps the focus on the question of what any person can give to a God who already owns everything. The answer fits a Christmas service or an Advent reflection that wants to point beyond gifts.
The gifts of the wise men are in Matthew 2:11. The child with royal names is Isaiah 9:6, and offering yourself as a living sacrifice is Romans 12:1.
Once upon a long night after a hard cry
Somewhere in Bethlehem
A baby graced the silence
Sweetly he's crying,
"I AM EMMANUEL"
Then angels gave him music
Shepherds gave reverence,
And a message to the land
A widow held and cherished
The god who became a man
[Chorus:]
But Oh lamb of God
Oh Prince of Peace
What tribute shall I bring to worship thee
I have no gold to lay at your feet
So Lamb of God I offer me
[Verse 2:]
Can you see the wise men
A star did guide them,
Searching all the earth
Till they found the one child
The very Godchild who ruled the universe
Did they know the lady's,
Little baby was God in fully man
And everything they gave him,
He himself had made with his hands
[Chorus:]
But Oh lamb of God
Oh Prince of Peace
What tribute shall I bring to worship thee
I have no gold to lay at your feet
So lamb of God I offer me
[Bridge:]
I bring you all my hopes
I bring you all my dreams
I give you all my soul my mind and all my strength
I wrap them all inside my heart to give to thee
And I come
O come let us adore him
O come let us adore him
O come let us adore him Christ ohhhh
[Chorus:]
Oh lamb of God oh Prince of Peace
What tribute shall I bring to worship thee
See I have no gold to lay at your feet
So Lamb of God may I offer...
I have no gold to lay at your feet
So Lamb of God
Please let me offer me
Lamb of God I offer me
