First Love

Paul Baloche's "First Love" opens with a quiet, deliberate image: lighting a candle and stirring the flame, then asking the sword of God's Word to pierce the heart once more. That posture of repeated openness sets up the chorus, where the singer names Jesus as Savior and asks to keep Him as the first love above everything else. The bridge turns the prayer outward into spoken invitation, urging listeners to say the words aloud — "let's just say that out to Him" — before settling into a simple, repeated confession: one desire, to love Him more and more. The song doesn't chase complexity; its strength is in the plainness of its ask, a believer returning to the affection that started it all and pleading to stay faithful to it. The candle and sword imagery keep the mood intimate and a little vulnerable, more a quiet rekindling than a shout.
