I Will Boast

Paul Baloche's "I Will Boast" builds its entire lyric around a single reversal: the wise, the strong, and the rich are told to stop boasting in what they have, while the humble are invited to give thanks to the One who made and saved them. That opening litany echoes the prophet Jeremiah's warning against self-congratulation, and the chorus answers it by relocating all confidence in God — repeated so insistently that "the One Who's worthy" becomes the song's anchor phrase. The bridge then sharpens the point to its simplest form: "I will make my boast in Christ alone," a line repeated until it functions as a creed rather than a chorus. There's no narrative arc here, no verse that tells a story; the song works by accumulation, stacking the same confession until the congregation has no room left for self-reliance. The humility language is deliberate — thanks is something the humble give, not something the impressive earn — and the repeated "He's worthy" turns the song's attention outward at the end rather than back on the singer. It's a song built for corporate singing, where the repetition isn't a weakness but the mechanism by which a truth moves from the page into the room.
