Stir Up A Hunger

The song opens with a confession of how completely God can reverse a person's condition: he turns darkness to light, and a lost soul can be turned around. Then comes the honest admission that left to itself the heart hardens like stone, and only God's love can make it tender again. That contrast between what we are on our own and what God can do sets up the central plea: stir up a hunger in my heart. The repeated line insists that nothing else will satisfy, that nothing else will do. The hunger being asked for is not for comfort or blessing in general but specifically for more of God himself. It is a prayer of surrender and desire at once, acknowledging that even the wanting has to be given by the one who is wanted.
