Well I know Lord it’s true, you’re the answer to my troubles
You’re the author and the finisher of my faith
The anchor of my life; I’m gonna trust you my redeemer
My desire; precious Jesus, you’re familiar with my weakness
And I fix my hope upon you Jesus
You’re the author and finisher of my faith
I will trust in you all the days of my life
And I’m gonna reach to my home
I’m in the race, moving on to you Father
No more turning back, I’m in the race to my destiny
I’m in the race, moving on to you Father
No more turning back, I’m in the race to my destiny
Until I see you my redeemer, until I see the Man who died for me
I will never lose my way, ’cause I’m in the race to my destiny
I’m in the race, moving on to you Father
No more turning back, I’m in the race to my destiny
I’m in the race, moving on to you Father
No more turning back, I’m in the race to my destiny
For I believe my savior you live, I’m gonna run the race before me
Step by step to the winning line, I’m in the race to my Father
I’m in the race, moving on to you Father
No more turning back, I’m in the race to my destiny
I’m in the race, moving on to you Father
No more turning back, I’m in the race to my destiny
I am in the race
Song Meaning
Paul Mwai's “I Am in the Race” treats the Christian life as a run with a fixed destination. The first lines name Jesus as the answer to troubles, “the author and the finisher of my faith,” and “the anchor of my life.” The singer admits that Christ is “familiar with my weakness” and says, “I fix my hope upon You, Jesus.”
The chorus gives the song its direction: “I'm in the race, moving on to You, Father. No more turning back, I'm in the race to my destiny.” The singer wants to keep going “until I see You, my Redeemer, until I see the Man who died for me,” and promises, “I will never lose my way.” The last verse is built on belief that the Savior lives and on steady progress, “step by step to the winning line.” The words are simple and repeated, which suits a song meant for congregational singing, and the trust in God's help carries through each part.
Running with Jesus as author and finisher of faith is Hebrews 12:1-2. Finishing the course is 2 Timothy 4:7, and pressing toward the goal is Philippians 3:14.
