Song Meaning
Petra's “Road To Zion” is based on Psalm 84:5-7, the psalm about pilgrims whose hearts are set on the road. It starts with a promise, “there is a way that leads to life, the few that find it never die,” and describes the path brightening as it goes, past mountain peaks “graced white with snow.” The second verse moves the road inward: “there is a road inside of you, inside of me there is one too,” and the pilgrim is not alone because “the road to Zion's in your heart.”
A river runs beside the path, “its waters living as they flow,” and its voice calls the traveler to kneel and drink. The song does not hide the hard parts, since a shadow can lie “like a mist across the road.” Encouragement is built into the same line: “where there's a shadow, there's a light.” The final verse is a reminder to look back with gratitude and then look forward, because “joy is not in where we've been, joy is who's waiting at the end.”
