Thorns

Petra draws its central image directly from Jesus' parable of the sower rather than inventing a new metaphor for spiritual struggle — "thorns, got to break away, thorns, over my head, thorns, choking the life away, thorns, just like He said." The repeated "just like He said" anchors the whole song to a specific text rather than a generic image of being overwhelmed.

"In my mind consumption, filled with earthy cares, no room to consider heavenly affairs" names the parable's own explanation of the thorns — worldly cares and the pull of wealth — rather than leaving the image vague. "Where I seek my treasure, there my heart will be" quotes Jesus' teaching from a different passage entirely, tying the two together as the same underlying problem.

"In the garden of my heart, I find the weeds have grown, tangled up in false desire, I can't do this alone" admits the limits of self-help directly, and "with His strength, I'll rise again, leaving thorns behind, walking in His freedom" locates the actual solution outside the singer's own effort to simply try harder.
