Song Meaning

PlanetShakers builds “The Greatest” on a single boast, aimed at God: “I'll shout it to the world, You're the greatest / I'll sing it till it's heard.” The reasoning is short and plain, “It's what You deserve,” and the response is to lift the name of Jesus “up high” without condition.

The verse is about giving everything. “I wanna give You what You deserve / And hold nothing in reserve,” the singer says, and admits “No matter how I'm feeling / I still believe it's what You deserve.” That admission keeps the song from being only exuberant, since praise here is a decision that doesn't wait for mood. The chorus gives way to a call to the whole room: “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord... Everybody shout unto the Lord / We lift You higher, sing in one accord.”

That call is Psalm 150:6 in nearly its own words, and the idea of greatness being the reason for praise comes from Psalm 145:3, “Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise.” Psalm 96:4 adds that he is to be feared above all gods. A note in the lyrics marks this recording as live in Nigeria.

I'll shout it to the world, You're the greatest

I'll sing it till it's heard, You're the greatest

It's what You deserve, You're the greatest

Jesus, I will lift Your name up high

I wanna give You what You deserve

And hold nothing in reserve

No matter how I'm feeling

I still believe it's what You deserve

All my praise belongs to You

I'll shout it to the world, You're the greatest

I'll sing it till it's heard, You're the greatest

It's what You deserve, You're the greatest

Jesus, I will lift Your name up high

I lift Your name up high

I wanna give You what You deserve

And hold nothing in reserve

No matter how I'm feeling

I still believe it's what You deserve

All my praise belongs to You

I'll shout it to the world, You're the greatest

I'll sing it till it's heard, You're the greatest

It's what You deserve, You're the greatest

Jesus, I will lift Your name up high

I lift Your name up high

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord

For He is worthy to be praised

Everybody shout unto the Lord

We lift You higher, sing in one accord

For You are worthy to be praised

Everybody shout unto the Lord

You're the greatest

Jesus, I will lift Your name up high

I lift Your name up high

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord

For He is worthy to be praised

Everybody shout unto the Lord

We lift You higher, sing in one accord

For You are worthy to be praised

Everybody shout unto the Lord
