Good Plans / Doxology

Red Rocks Worship opens on the oldest words in the song by far — the Doxology, "praise God from whom all blessings flow" — before moving into new lyrics built on Psalm 23's shape. "The Lord is my shepherd, and He is everything I need" sets up the same confidence the psalm carries: no fear "though I walk through the valley of shadow and death."

The chorus commits to a specific claim rather than a vague one — "He has good plans, He has good plans for me... in deserts and gardens" — refusing to limit the promise to seasons that already feel good. That phrase echoes Jeremiah's word to exiles in Babylon, people with every reason to doubt it: plans to prosper them and not to harm them, plans to give hope and a future.

The closing section returns to the psalm's ending, "surely your goodness and mercy will follow after me," repeated until it settles rather than argued for once and moved past. Pairing a centuries-old hymn text with a modern arrangement of an ancient psalm is really the whole idea here: the plans in question aren't new, and neither is the confidence in them.
