Song Meaning

Rich Mullins sets long stretches of John 14 through 16 to music almost verbatim rather than paraphrasing loosely — 'in my Father's house there are many, many rooms... I'm going up there now to prepare a place for you' follows John 14:2's promise closely, keeping Jesus's own farewell words as the actual lyric rather than a song written about them.

'Remember you did not choose me, no I have chosen you' lifts John 15:16 almost exactly, reversing the expected direction of a typical worship song's language — this isn't the singer choosing God, it's a direct quotation of Jesus telling his disciples the opposite is true. 'In the world you will have trouble, but I leave you my peace' answers John 16:33's warning about tribulation with its own promise in the same breath, refusing to separate the hard news from the comfort. The title phrase, repeated after nearly every line, keeps circling back to the same destination — not a vague heaven, but specifically wherever Jesus himself already is.
