Song Meaning

Riley Clemmons' “Remember” speaks to someone who feels worthless. The first verse is addressed to “you,” a person who has been cut so deeply that they can't see their own beauty, and who has been caught in a lie that says they are only as good as what their body can do.

The chorus gives the counter-argument. “You're not too far gone, ’cause the Maker of the stars, He don't make mistakes, He just make art. Don't you go and paint over your scars.” The repeated hook asks the listener to remember who they are, more than what others say, beautiful and brave. The second verse describes people who are told not to speak and so scream in silence, with words held inside. It answers with two plain claims: there has never been a door the truth can't break down, and never a hate that love can't tame. Riley has said the song grew from her own struggles with self-image, and the tone is encouraging without being preachy. The pop arrangement is bright and has a rhythm that suits a younger crowd. It is a good song for youth groups and for anyone who needs to hear that their value comes from the God who made them, not from a comparison with other people.

Being fearfully and wonderfully made is Psalm 139:14. Being made in God's image is Genesis 1:27, and being God's handiwork is Ephesians 2:10.

I know that you feel like you're so unworthy
Been cut so deep that you can't see the beauty
You've caught up in a lie that tells you
You're only good as what your body can move
But you're not too far gone

'Cause the Maker of the stars
He don't make mistakes, He just make art
Don't you go and paint over your scars

Remember who you are, are
Remember who you are, are
You're more than what they say
You're beautiful and brave
Remember who you are, are

Remember who you are

They say, "Don't speak," so you scream in silence
The words that you really mean, on the inside fightin'
There's never been a door the truth can't break down
There's never been a hate that love can't tame now
So show them who you are

'Cause the Maker of the stars
He don't make mistakes, He just make art
Don't you go and paint over your scars

Remember who you are, are
Remember who you are, are
You're more than what they say
You're beautiful and brave
Remember who you are, are, uh

Remember who you are
Remember who you are (Hey)
Remember who you are

'Cause you know, the Maker of the stars
He don't make mistakes, He just make art
Don't you go and paint over your scars

Remember who you are, are
Remember who you are, are
You're more than what they say
You're beautiful and brave
Remember who you are, are, uh
