Song Meaning

Riley Clemmons keeps Joseph Mohr's carol's familiar shape but adds a bridge not present in the standard hymnal version: "he is here, He is here, our hope has come, in the quiet ways, the Promised Son."

"Silent night, holy night, shepherds quake at the sight, glories stream from heaven afar" stays close to the traditional second verse, keeping the shepherds' fear alongside the announcement rather than smoothing past it.

The added bridge, "our God with us, in the stillness lies the higher way," makes explicit what the original carol only implies — that the stillness itself is the point, not an absence of something bigger happening elsewhere. "Son of God, love's pure light, radiant beams from Thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace" closes the carol on its familiar third verse, the bridge having added a layer of present-tense response without displacing the original text.

Silent night, Holy night
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

O Silent night, oh

Silent night, Holy night
Shepherds quake at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heav'nly hosts sing Alleluia
Christ the Savior is born
Christ the Savior is born

The Savior is born

He is here, He is here
Our hope has come
In the quiet ways
The Promised Son
He is here, He is here
Our God with us
In the stillness lies
The higher way

Silent night, Holy night
Son of God, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth

O Silent night
