Pressure is the setting: "this live can crush us underneath its weight," with "the river rushes over your feet" and "bulls running through your streets." Sanctus Real writes the song as one person steadying another. The reassurance is practical rather than lofty: "You don't have to run from the fears behind you / turn around and I'll stand beside you."

The second verse moves to the front line, where "you're gonna feel the bullets, gonna feel the heat," and the fight may call for "turn[ing] the other cheek." The refrain stays steady through all of it: "We may bend but will not break." Alongside the image of a bending tree, the song offers something to hold, since "we have love and faithfulness," and the listener is told to "steel your heart and lift your head."

Only the final lines name the source of that resilience: "if ever you should feel like giving up / remember that God is with us." Scripture runs close behind it. Isaiah 43:2 promises God's presence through rivers and fire, 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 describes being pressed but not crushed, and Joshua 1:9 commands courage because God goes with you wherever you go.
