Sanctus Real frames closeness to God as an active pursuit rather than a settled state in "Closer" — "away from you I'm falling apart, we need to be closer than we are, you're all I need." The distance is named as a present problem, not resolved by the fact that the relationship already exists.

"So what can I do to get closer? I know there is more my heart can bear, I give you control 'cause I need you to take me there" treats surrender as the actual method rather than effort alone — the singer can't close the distance by trying harder, only by handing over control. "I'm running home, I'm a slave set free" holds both images together, running toward something while already released from what held him back.
